What it takes to be a Cameraman

The requirements:
- male or female
- having an educational background in cinematography or having been trained in a multi media institution is preferable.
- Having knowledge of photography is also important because basically you work with a camera. It would be easier to operate a TV camera if you know the basics of photography.
- You have to be physically fit and strong (because you will handle the camera for quite a long time).

How to learn
You can learn to be a cameraman through formal education and non-formal education. If you study cinematography or major in multi media at college, you can take classes of operating cameras. But if you want to do self-study, you can learn from books. The important thing is, you learn how to handle a camera, use picture compositions and lighting. Having a talent for art is also important because as a cameraman, you should be able to produce interesting pictures, not just making a record of an object or event. On the job training with a professional cameraman is also good for beginners. Usually, learning by doing is the best method.

The job
Cameraman may have various kinds of jobs. If they work at a TV station, usually they are responsible for recording the various shows. It can be for a news program, sports programs, music program, documentary, etc. if they work for a production house, they usually tape for TV commercials, music videos or events. The job is based on the request of the producer or director. So, cameraman work according to the scenario or instructions. For example, for a video clip, when they have an idea about how to take the picture, they should consult first with the director. Cameraman should have guts too, especially when they have to record a street demonstration or an unstable or moving object. Sometimes they have to struggle with other cameraman in a crowd of people.
This kind of job has a career path, starting from cameraman, chief cameraman up to production manager. In the film industry, it begin with best boy, moving up respectively to table man, loader, assistant cameraman, cameraman and director of photography.

Tips
- Keep on learning by reading books, photo magazines and seeing photo exhibitions.
- Join any kind of workshops on photography or cinematography.
- Always keep an eye out for the latest camera technology. You can find the information in photo magazines
- Watch and learn from all kinds of movies. From movies, you can learn about picture composition, lighting, colors and how to take pictures from various angles.
- Regularly exercise, especially your legs. Working as a cameraman demands walking or running frequently.
